Advocating for Inclusivity: Aruba’s Labor Laws in English and Spanish

Recently, I’ve found myself immersed in a flurry of enriching activities that have left little room for idle moments. Despite the bustling schedule, my commitment to delivering insightful weekly LEGAL columns remains unshaken – a testament to my dedication to your enlightenment. In addition to maintaining this steady flow of information, I’ve embarked on exciting new ventures that I’m thrilled to share with you. But before that, let me say how thrilled I am about getting calls, comments, and emails from you, my loyal readers. It is even nicer to be introduced to someone, and the response is: “Wow, is it you? I love your columns. I read them every week!!”. It makes me almost feel like a rock star.

The release of two new labor law books, one in English and the other in Spanish, marks a significant milestone in my journey to make Aruba’s legal landscape accessible to all. Gomez Coffie Law celebrated this initiative alongside dignitaries from Spanish-speaking embassies and consulates at a book launch that also doubled as a labor law workshop, reinforcing our island’s ties with these important cultural and economic partners.

The culmination of these efforts was beautifully highlighted at the 2024 commencement ceremony of Cavalla International University. I was deeply honored to receive an honorary doctorate of law degree alongside esteemed colleagues. Yet, the pride and joy in the eyes of my dad, Delwin, and the voices over the phone from my aunts, Iris and Iraia, indeed underscored the personal significance of these professional achievements. While you can call me “Doctor” now, Lincoln would do just fine. Remember that if you need medical attention, you better call an actual medical doctor, M.D., because the title doesn’t qualify me to practice medicine.

Join me as I share my perspective on why publishing my books in English and Spanish is necessary and how these works play a crucial role in enhancing Aruba’s broader legal and cultural landscape.

Why an English Edition of Aruba’s Labor Laws

Aruba’s vibrant tourist economy draws substantial foreign investment, particularly from the United States. Major U.S. hospitality companies and numerous American franchises operate extensively on the island. This international presence significantly influences our local employment landscape, making it imperative to ensure that our labor laws are accessible not only to Dutch speakers but also to the vast number of English-speaking expatriates and workers who contribute immensely to our economy.

I recognized this need and created “Aruba Labor Laws: For Employers and Employees” in English. While Dutch remains our official language, Aruba’s economic dynamics – especially in the hotel sector and broader tourism industry – demand inclusivity and accessibility of legal resources. By providing an English version of the labor laws, I aim to foster a more inclusive environment where all stakeholders, regardless of their native language, can understand their rights and responsibilities. This effort supports our commitment to fair labor practices and ensures that the legal framework governing employment is clear to everyone involved. The response to this initiative has been overwhelmingly positive. Interestingly, even locals, who are generally fluent in Dutch, have preferred the English version of the book. This feedback underscores a broader trend toward greater accessibility and convenience in disseminating important legal information.

The book “Aruba Labor Laws: For Employers and Employees” is thoughtfully designed to cater to modern preferences and needs, available both as an e-book and in paperback form, this dual format ensures that whether you prefer the convenience and immediacy of digital access or the tactile experience of a physical book, you can easily obtain and utilize this crucial resource. Available exclusively online and via WhatsApp, purchasing the guide is as simple as a few taps on your device, bringing critical legal information directly to your device, no matter where you are located. You can order the paperback version here and the e-book version here.  This accessibility aligns with contemporary consumption patterns and significantly enhances the ease with which businesses and employees can use Aruba’s labor laws. The traditional paperback version, once ordered, is available for pick-up at Gomez Coffie Law – orders of five or more are delivered for free and with a big smile. This method ensures that anyone, anywhere in Aruba or globally, can access this crucial information with just a few clicks.

Celebrating this achievement, I am not just promoting legal knowledge but also championing inclusivity and support for the diverse community that powers our island’s economy. By bridging language barriers, we’re helping ensure that every worker and employer in Aruba’s dynamic market has the tools they need to succeed.

This publication is more than just a book; it’s a testament to Aruba’s forward-thinking approach to business, labor, and cultural inclusivity. Let’s continue to embrace and support these initiatives that make our legal landscape as welcoming and accessible as our beautiful island itself.

Why a Spanish Edition of Aruba’s Labor Laws

The book “Leyes Laborales de Aruba: Para Empleados y Empleadores” serves as a vital bridge, connecting the heart of Aruba’s economy – our Spanish-speaking entrepreneurs and workforce – with the critical legal information they need to succeed. Available in both e-book and paperback formats, this publication is crafted with deep empathy for the Spanish-speaking community, whose hard work and dedication not only fuel sectors essential to our island’s prosperity but with whom many of us have longstanding ties or share our heritage. Aruba is a melting pot. You have heard this before, but it goes much further: the very fabric of our society is made from threads originating from many countries, and the thread coming from Central America, Lat-Am, Spain, and the Spanish-speaking islands in the Caribbean for an integral part.

The book is available online, and if you are shy about online shopping, you can also use WhatsApp at 730.3030. This resource is more than just a book; it’s a declaration of our commitment to inclusivity and support for every community member. It acknowledges the profound ties that bind Aruba with the vibrant cultures of Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and beyond – nations that have enriched our island with their spirit and strength.

By providing this book in Spanish, I want to ensure that every Spanish-speaking person – whether navigating the complexities of employment laws for the first time or steering their business towards new growth opportunities – feels supported, valued, and integral to Aruba’s future. This is more than just understanding rights and obligations; it’s about empowering a crucial segment of our population to thrive as part of one united, prosperous Aruba.
